Guys - need your help with keepers

Recommended Posts

Our keeper league is resetting this year and moving to a snake draft after decades of auction.

We are trying to find a fair system when it comes to keepers.  We are looking for ways to be build teams around keepers but at the same time don’t want the same team holding on to the same player for a decade.  Basically I’m hoping to hear how some of you guys do it.  Thanks!

One option mentioned here quite often is where your keepers count one round higher than where you drafted them last year (with special arrangements for waiver wire pickups). This rewards a good draft, while still leaving room for a good season or a bit of luck.

One other option is that you can keep a player for max 3 seasons. In either case (or the combination), allow for trading of picks. That makes for a bit more excitement in the off-season.

The latter is what we do.  It rewards a manager for making a good pick but not so much that he can dominate forever.  And you can't keep a first round pick.  If you keep a second round pick, you can only keep him for one more year.   Waiver wire pickups are excluded.  You have to have drafted the player and kept him the full year in order to keep him the next.

It is too bad you are moving away from auction. Auction is great as it allows for more flexibility in targeting your must have players. Gives everyone a shot. In our auction keeper you can keep someone for 2 years at that contract then they go back in as a restricted FA or you can franchise them (top 5 average cost from the past year for that position). So basically after 2-3 years each player is back up for auction. Works great.

The other options talking about "round +1" is a good way to do it. But even then someone who gets Karama in the 10th or 12th round keeps them basically forever unless there is a limit. Allowing trading for players for picks is a good way for people to improve their keepers each year or sell/trade off extra top keepers.

I still think I like auction best as everyone will have a shot at guys like JT, Najee, Chase, Pitts etc. when they come into the league, not just those with first picks.
